The male senior constable took his own life at a home in Dandenong North early Sunday.
The Herald Sun understands the shooting occurred in a family home with a firearm not registered to police.
A Coroner will investigate the circumstances surrounding his death.
He is the latest serving police officer to take his own life.
A male officer was found dead at the Australian Federal Police headquarters in Melbourne in November 2017.
A female agent died in a non-suspicious shooting at the same building eight months earlier.
Two Victoria Police officer killed themselves in the same week in 2016.
An officer in the southern metro area took his life in February, two days after another member killed himself in regional Victoria.
