A $500 million redevelopment of Westfield Doncaster is a step closer after being ticked off by the state government.
The massive makeover includes a “gateway” — towering up to 14 storeys — above a new two-storey “premium” shopping complex.
It will add an extra 43,000 sqm of retail and 18,000 sqm of commercial office space, as well as thousands of new parking spaces and an expanded bus interchange.
Planning Minister Richard Wynne will on Monday approve the redevelopment masterplan, paving the way for a planning permit to be lodged with Manningham City Council.
Mr Wynne said the expansion would draw thousands of shoppers from across the world.
“Melbourne is already the nation’s retail capital and this major expansion will cement its reputation for the years to come,” he said.
Plans for the mega-redevelopment have been on the agenda for years, and were originally mooted in 2016.
But they were floated again last year, after a rethink that included moving the “gateway” further south, adding a pedestrian entry on Westfield Drive and reconfiguring the bus interchange.
Scentre Group’s Stewart White said the redevelopment would realise “the full potential of the site”.

He said the first stage would focus on high-end speciality fashion, dining, entertainment, and health and wellness. It comes as construction looms for an upgrade of Westfield Doncaster’s eateries.
“This exciting upgrade will deliver a best-in-class customer experience, including new and vibrant dining options and a landscaped outdoor area,” Mr White said.
“So whether that’s catching a movie, entertaining the kids, browsing the latest designer fashion trends or meeting friends for a meal, our customers will soon be able to enjoy more of these activities.”
The redevelopment, if approved by the council, is expected to be built in three stages over three years.
