The helicopter pilot who miraculously survived after crashing into the roof of a Mentone home is reportedly in “good spirits” and has vowed to fly again.
The male pilot, who is training to get his commercial licence, remains at The Alfred hospital being treated for his injuries following last Wednesday’s accident.
Director of The Helicopter Group Michael Van Der Zypp, who owns the chopper involved in the crash, said the pilot was due to undergo a surgical procedure for his lower back on Tuesday.
“He is in excellent spirits,” Mr Van Der Zypp said.
“He’ll get back up (in the air) again. It is his dream and he’s at the final stages of getting his licence. He is set to make a full recovery. When we found out he was going to be OK, it was wonderful.”
Mr Van Der Zypp, an experienced pilot himself, said the cause of the crash was under investigation.
“There is nothing untoward as far as we know, the chopper had plenty of fuel,” he said.
“Realistically, if the helicopter’s engine did stop, he did an exceptional job of landing where he did. But we don’t know the full story and we will wait for the The Australian Transport Safety Bureau report.”
He said it was “never good” to hear of aviation accidents, but the response from emergency services, as well as an off-duty nurse were to be highly commended.
“Everyone co-operated, they did an extremely great job.”
The investigation continues.
