Indie rock singer Phoebe Bridgers has doubled down on her anti-Margaret Court chants at Melbourne’s Laneway Festival on Saturday night.
“Anyone hear about my new best friend Margaret Court?” she asked the audience, met with roaring applause and cheering.
“Homophobic stupid b---h … Irrelevant f---ing b---h,” Bridgers laughed.
The popular US singer then asked her adoring crowd if they wanted to shout “f--- Margaret Court”, leading the masses once again in a chorus of profanity against the 80-year-old Pentecostal reverend.
It comes after Bridgers played at Margaret Court Arena in Melbourne last week and called the former No. 1 tennis player a “stupid c---”.“F--- that stupid c---, change your name,” she said.
Thousands of fans yelled and cheered in unison as revellers called the 28-year-old “iconic” on social media.
“This was so amazing, I love her,” one woman said.
“She was so real for this, they should rename it Phoebe Bridgers Arena,” another said.
Court — a Perth-based pastor — has continually caused widespread chaos through her overtly anti-LGBT rhetoric, calling transgender children the work “of the devil” and referring to same-sex attraction as “a choice”.
Her commentary has attracted critique from the biggest names in tennis, including Martina Navratilova, who wrote that Court’s “vitriol is not just an opinion”.
“She is actively trying to keep LGBT people from getting equal rights (note to Court: we are human beings, too). She is demonising trans kids and trans adults everywhere.”
Laneway Festival is ticketed for about 12,000 people and has previously hosted world-famous Aussie acts including Vance Joy, Tame Impala and Gang of Youths.
