‘This government has failed’: Anthony Albanese unsuccessful in controlling petrol prices

Petrol Prices across Victoria are soaring to an all-time high and motorists are feeling the pain – but new data reveals prices at the bowser vary wildly depending the suburb.

Herald Sun analysis of the RACV petrol price monitor revealed prices ranged at the beginning of October from 193.9 to 246.6 cents per litre.

This means some motorists could be saving up to $40 more per tank by just driving down the road.

Prices were the cheapest in Maribyrnong at 193.9 cents per litre.

Motorists could also score petrol on the cheaper end at Thomastown where unleaded was sold for 196.1 cents per litre.

In Epping the lowest price per litre was 196.7 cents, in Roxburgh Park it was 197.9 cents and in Maidstone people could fill up for 199.7 cents per litre.

At the other end of the spectrum Gisborne registered the most expensive across the state with a litre of fuel costing a whopping 240.9 cents.

Residents in Healesville were also hit hard with unleaded selling for 229.9 cents per litre.

One fed up commuter said skyrocketing prices have become an unfortunate reality.

“I think we’ve all become accustomed to paying $2+ per litre,” he said.

He said the government should do more to make it more affordable.

“Governments all over the world have the ability to reduce the price of oil but they choose not to.”

Another told the Herald Sun that people were purposely driving less to avoid bowser pain.

“The rising petrol prices are making workers want to work from home more, which in turn is impacting the local economy and footprint in the CBD,” she said.

In July, Mark McKenzie, the CEO of the Australasian Convenience and Petroleum Marketers Association (ACAPMA) told the Herald Sun commuters should shop around as it can make a big difference and help avoid more pain at the pump.

“There is a petrol price cycle. You should be able to buy fuel at the discounted price before everyone moves up so it is vitally important to use petrol price apps at this time to get the best value for money,” he said.
