Paramedics save Melbourne woman who fell into a coma

Feeling unwell, Eve Sabine lay down hoping to sleep off a minor cold — only to wake more than a week later surrounded by relieved family members. That she woke at all is a credit to her paramedic heroes.

THINKING she had a minor cold setting in, Eve Sabine lay down on her bed hoping to sleep it off.

When she woke more than a week letter the 29-year-old was in hospital and surrounded by relieved family members desperate to see what damage had been done to her.

That she was given the chance to wake up at all, Ms Sabine, will be forever grateful to Ambulance Victoria paramedics and others.

Three weeks after having an insulin pump installed last October, the device stopped working without warning.

As her blood sugar levels rose off the scales Ms Sabine fell into a coma and lay on death’s door for more than more than 12 hours until her housemate Kaitlyn arrived home from work drinks.

“I went home from work sick one day and went to bed, then I just never woke up,” Ms Sabine said.

“I went home from work sick one day and went to bed, then I just never woke up,” Ms Sabine said.

“For the first couple of days they didn’t think I would make it so they flew everyone in to say goodbyes.

“After that they said ‘she’s going to be OK’ but they thought there would be a lot of permanent brain damage.

“I woke up a bit over a week later and was in the intensive care unit (and) my parents explained to me what had happened.”

On the eve of today’s (THURS) Thank A Paramedic Day Ms Sabine was given the chance to meet some of her saviours, and learn just how dangerous her situation had been.

When paramedics Kelly Smith and Aliex Kay arrived on the scene their patient had soaring blood pressure, a body temperature below 30 degrees and sugar levels so high they could not even be measured, but they were able to stabilise her long enough to get to the Royal Melbourne Hospital’s intensive care unit, though with little hope of her waking.

“I didn’t even follow up on Eve she was that unwell when I left her at hospital because there are some things I don’t want to know,” Ms Kay said.

“Then I get a letter from Eve’s mum saying ‘thanks you for being there and helping her’, saying she was doing really well. That was a pretty big day.”
