It’s still sinking in for Australian hero Jessica Hull that she won a silver medal at the Paris Olympics.

The first Australian woman to win an Olympic medal in the 1500m, Hull is back on home soil and ready to race again – to the Caulfield Guineas on Saturday.

“I absolutely love the opportunities and doors the medal has opened for me,” Hull said.

“I felt happiness absolutely and disbelief a little bit. I can’t believe I did that and dreamt of it for so long.

“Now coming back and hearing it was a bit more expected than I was aware of, relief would have come to mind if I was aware of the pressure, but I was able to truly enjoy it for my achievement and my dreams and now I can share it with everyone back home who thought it was possible.

“Everyone I’ve talked to has been so touched and so inspired.”

Hull, wearing a Jason Grech gown and styled by Lana Wilkinson, caught up with thoroughbred trick horse Ty at RMIT University’s running track in Bundoora.

“I love animals, he was a beautiful horse to work with, so calm and it calmed me, too,” she said.

“I haven’t been to the races down in Melbourne at all before so I’m excited to go to the Caulfield Guineas and see what it’s all about. I don’t get the opportunity to dress up very often, I’m always in running clothes so it’s nice to do some fancy things.”

Hull will return home to Newcastle next week and is already feeling refreshed for her next block of training with the LA Olympics in her sights in four years’ time.

“I had a good rest and recharged and it’s easy to get out the door because I’m fresh and ready to get into training again,” she said.

“I ran out of European days this year so I couldn’t holiday but we’ll figure out how to celebrate at some point. I have a few ideas but haven’t done anything to commemorate the Olympics just yet.

“The best thing I could have done to celebrate was to take the medal to see people who have meant so much to me and I don’t think anything I could do could top it.”

Hull will be one of the Sportsbet Caulfield Cup Carnival guests, along with style ambassador Wilkinson, Bar Bambi founders Nick and Rozalia Russian, plus friends of MRC Harley Reid and Ruby Brownless.
