Olivia and Oliver top the list of Victoria’s most popular baby names

VICTORIAN parents have stuck to traditional baby names, with Olivia and Oliver topping the most-popular list two years in a row.

Longtime favourites Jack and William remained high on the list for boys, but Leo and Isaac have crept on to the list for the first time.

Among the girls, Charlotte and Amelia were in the top three. Ava also made the list this year and Harper crept to number 18 for the first time, which appeared to be fuelled by the long-awaited release of the To Kill a Mocking Bird sequel by Harper Lee.

The list for the most popular 2015 baby names was released by the Victorian Registry of Births, Deaths and Marriages today.

Attorney-General Martin Pakula welcomed the list and urge new parents to register their children’s birth as soon as possible.

“Once again Oliver and Olivia have been very popular,’’ Mr Pakula said.

“They are traditional names and will be around for quite a few years.

“I noticed Harper had entered the top 20 this year. Grace has also been very popular and Isaac has been very popular as well. When I was a boy it was all James, Andrew and Steven. Names have changed greatly over he last 40 years since I was a kid.”

Mr Pakula greeted baby Xavier (7 months) and Ava (6 months) at Parliament today who both had names in the top 20 list.

Among the names that have dropped off the top 20 list was Zara, which debuted at number 17 last year. while Joshua has dropped off the top of the boys’ list.
