A rare Victorian number plate has sold for the same price as a brand new Porsche.

One of only 90 double-digit number plates in Victoria, the black and white “59” plate sold for a remarkable $538,000 to a well-known bidder from Toorak last night.

A spokesman from Shannons, who auctioned the plate, said it was “a very good price” for the historical artefact.

“It is a lot of money but it’s something that is only going to get rarer so the price will continue to rise,” he said.

“Really, you are getting two pieces of tin for the value of a complete car.”

In 2016 the last double-digit plate to be sold, No.21, got snapped up for $530,000.

At the time of the sale, it was the highest costing item of the auction, trumping dozens of vintage cars.

The national record for a license plate sale was for a NSW No.4 plate which sold for $2.45 million in 2017.
