Eagle-eyed drivers have spotted a number of new speed cameras along the West Gate Freeway — here’s when they’ll be turned on.

Motorists on the West Gate Freeway beware.
Speed cameras have been installed at several locations on gantries over the roadway, but have not been turned on – yet.
Eagle-eyed motorists have spotted the new cameras popping up along the route including on one gantry near Grieve Parade, Altona North.
A total of 60 digital speed cameras will be installed to replace old ones that were removed when the road changes began.
The construction of 46 gantries for signs and signals is continuing as part of the widening and resurfacing works on the busy western arterial road.
The fixed cameras are for speed detection and expect to be turned on when the roadworks have been completed, probably late next year.
Until now, motorists have avoided being caught by fixed speed cameras but such is the traffic chaos caused by the roadworks that some motorists have remarked speeding was not possible anyway.
When opened, the speed limit for West Gate Freeway is likely to be 80kmh.
The project is part of the $10.8bn West Gate Tunnel project due for completion late next year.
The roadworks have been a nightmare for residents and commuters in Melbourne’s west since the project began in 2018.
Eight lanes are being increased to 12 on the 18km of roads which carry about 200,000 vehicles each day.
Latest data showed that a red light and speed camera set up at the bottom of a hill in Avondale Heights in Melbourne’s northwest raised nearly $3m in just three months.
