FANS sick of queuing for food and drinks at the MCG may be set for some relief with new technology aimed at cutting wait times to be trialled at the home of Australian sport.

In an Australian-first, the Melbourne Cricket Club will use tracking technology to determine how long spectators are likely to wait in line and display the time on dedicated screens.

Installation of the WaitTime technology has begun with MCC chiefs expecting to have it operating in time for the AFL finals.

MCC chief executive Stuart Fox hoped the technology, already used at many US stadiums, would enhance the fan experience by speeding up service.

``This system will not only help to inform MCG patrons about the expected wait time but also show and direct them to other nearby outlets that they may not have previously considered,’’ he said.

The system will use sensors and advanced algorithms to track queues and wait times at food outlets and bars at the stadium.

It will allow fans to make an educated decision about which bar or food queue to join in the hope of getting back to their seat as soon as possible.

The MCG will initially trial the technology on the ground and basement levels in public areas of the Great Southern and Olympic Stands.
