POLICE are cracking down on motorists across the state with on-the-spot fines soaring and official warnings plummeting.

New figures show that in the last financial year Victoria Police issued 12,774 more on-the-spot fines for speeding, red light dodging and registration offences than the previous year.

Acting Assistant Commissioner Glenn Weir, of the Road Policing Command, said the data showed Victoria Police were committed to catching dangerous motorists.

“Police however are extremely disappointed that so many motorists, from the on-the-spot fine figures; 568 per day, choose to speed, run red lights and drive unroadworthy vehicles,” he said.

“Victoria Police, through intelligence led operations and patrols, continues to work hard on the ground to improve road safety and educate and inform road user behaviour.

“Educating motorists through enforcement is a priority for police as we know that the risk of being caught is one of the strongest motivators for behaviour change.”
Mr Weir said warnings came down to operational decisions made by individual police officers.

Police Minister Lisa Neville said record numbers of police had been recruited across the state to crack down on offenders.

“Victorians can expect to see more police out on the roads enforcing the law,” she said.

“If you break the road rules, if you speed, drink or run red lights — then you are putting lives in danger and you will face the consequences of your actions.

“We will continue to take advice from police on what they need to prevent road trauma and reduce the number of lives lost across Victoria.”
