Chocolate lovers are in a meltdown over Cadbury Roses changes, with some claiming a Christmas tradition has been ruined.

The confectionery giant has copped complaints after “refreshing” the classic treats, which are a big favourite over the festive season.

Many consumers only stumbled across the difference when tucking into the sweets over the Christmas and New Year break. The brand had a makeover in August.

Among the changes, strawberry cremes and classic fudges have been dumped; peppermint creme has become peppermint crème crunch; hazelnut swirl has more blended nut; and white raspberry and vanilla nougat have been added.

More than 5000 people have supported a recently started ‘Fix Cadbury Roses’ change.org petition calling for a backflip.

Some customers expressing dismay on social media have described the changes as “gross” and “awful”.

“Bring back the original Rose’s chocolates. You ruined mine and judging from the other posts on your page all of Australia’s Christmas,” one commented on Facebook.

Another added: “You’ve lost me as a customer. They are feral.”

Said another: “Feeling physically ill at the thought of what you have done to a formerly great quality product … You cannot even begin to imagine the heartache this has caused my family after years of tradition”.

But Evie Filippis, 17, gave a taste test the thumbs up yesterday.

“They have to keep up with the changing market. I thought they were a nice and something new,” she said.

Parent company Mondelez Australia said it had “updated our classics and added some new flavours while making improvements to the taste, texture and presentation of the product”.

“Cadbury Roses have always evolved in response to the changing taste preferences of our consumers …” it said.

“We’re sorry to hear that some consumers are disappointed, but we’ll be sure to take the feedback on-board, as we have done so before.”

Not all chocolate eaters are finding the revamp hard to stomach.

One fan wrote on Facebook: “Just wanted to say we love the new Roses choccies! The old ones tasted chemically and fake”.
