A group of neo-Nazi’s have gatecrashed a Victorian Liberal MP’s event, which was being held to highlight the renaming of a lake in honour of the founder of Sikhism in Melbourne’s outer southeast.
Member for Gembrook Brad Battin and fellow Liberal MP Ann-Marie Hermans were holding the community gathering on Tuesday night about the recent renaming of the Guru Nanak Lake by the Allan government, when a group of men dressed in black and with symbols on their shirts showed up in the crowd.
It’s understood Mr Battin and Ms Hermans were meeting with locals who say they were not consulted on the name change when a group of men suspected of being neo-Nazi’s arrived.
Pictures have since surfaced showing the men included neo-Nazis Thomas Sewell, Joel Davis, Nathan Bull and Jimeone Roberts.
It’s not clear whether the meeting disbanded or whether the Liberal MPs were aware of their presence.
The latest neo-Nazi incident has occurred amid the ongoing court battle between opposition Liberal leader John Pesutto and expelled Liberal MP Moira Deeming who was expelled after a band of racists attended her Let Women Speak rally on the steps of the Victorian parliament in March last year.
It’s understood the men who attended the rally were not invited by the Liberal MPs.
An opposition spokesperson said: “Upon becoming aware of these individuals, Victoria Police were immediately alerted and Liberal MPs in attendance left the event.”
However, the government say their attendance raises concerns.
Assistant Treasurer Danny Pearson put out a media release on Friday afternoon with six questions about the Liberals response to the event.
“Their evil ideology is to scapegoat minorities – and it’s got no place here,” he said.
“The leader of the opposition needs to come out today and explain”.
