Mysterious ‘explosion’ shakes houses in southeast Melbourne suburbs

Residents in Bentleigh East and some neighbouring suburbs have reported they woke up to a “loud bang” on Tuesday night in an incident that’s baffled many.

A mysterious "loud explosion" noise has rocked southeastern Melbourne.

Mystery has rocked residents in Melbourne’s southeastern suburbs as they try to determine what caused a “loud bang” that rattled their neighbourhood overnight.

Dozens of locals from Bentleigh East and surrounding suburbs took to social media after they were woken, or startled by what sounded like a “huge explosion” just before midnight on Tuesday.

For some residents, the rumble was so loud it shook houses while another person claimed they saw a “big light” flash through their roller shutters followed by a loud sound.

The startling noise prompted several people to check the government’s Vic Emergency website as others took to Facebook to ask if anyone else had heard the sound.

“Did anyone else hear that loud explosion noise just now? It was near Daphne/Laurel St!” one resident said.

“Came here to see if anyone posted. There were sirens a plenty about five minutes ago too,” another added.

Meanwhile residents in the neighbouring suburbs of Carnegie also heard the noise.

Ambulance Victoria confirmed paramedics were called to a report of an explosion in Bentleigh East about 11.30pm on Tuesday night, however remained tight-lipped on the details of whether something did ignite or erupt.

“Emergency treatment or transport was not required,” an Ambulance Victoria spokesperson said.

Meanwhile spokespersons for Fire Rescue Victoria and Victoria Police said they were not aware of the incident.

The Herald Sun has also contacted Country Fire Authority for comment.

According to the Vic Emergency website, there was a structure fire in the vicinity about 11.36pm, however it’s not known if the explosion sound is related.

The large blast comes amid a series of similar noises heard in the area in recent weeks according to some residents.
