Melbourne winter arts festival Rising has revived free afternoon newspaper mX for two special editions.
Popular sections Here’s Looking at You, Street Style and For What It’s Worth are back as part of the publications, which will also deep dive into some of the 105 events being put on across inner Melbourne as part of Rising 2024.
Rising co-artistic directors Hannah Fox and Gideon Obarzanek said: “We were looking for a high-impact way to mark the festival’s opening and introduce Rising to new audiences.
“Bringing back our city’s beloved mX newspaper for two very special Rising editions made perfect sense.
“That shared sense of fun and quirkiness that mX embodied aligned with our mission to celebrate Melbourne’s identity and ensure art remains accessible to all.”
The first edition of mX Rising will be available on May 29 and 30 and the second, on June 5 and 6.
They will be handed out between 3-7pm at and around CBD train stations, including Flinders St, Melbourne Central and Southern Cross.
Rising runs from June 1-16, and offers free and ticketed events spanning visual art, performance, public art installations, live music and parties.
Standout shows include Geoff Sobelle’s Food, which Obarzanek described as Rising’s “take on dinner theatre (with) an extraordinary twist”, and One Song, in which “a squad of musicians (play) a song, repeatedly, in different tempos, while being challenged on sporting equipment”.
Fox said last year’s festival attracted 750,000 people, and she expected an “even bigger turnout” at the 2024 event.
