A well-known greyhound trainer brutally murdered last month has been remembered for her “heart of gold.”

Karen Leek was farewelled by family and friends on Tuesday, who remembered the great-aunt as a “brilliant person” who loved her dogs.

About 50 guests paid their respects in person, while more than 300 mourners watched the service online.

Lifelong friend Angela recalled fond memories of her and “Kaz” gallivanting through the bush on horseback as teenagers and discovering their love for greyhounds.

“In the 56 years of our friendship, Karen was always there for the special times in my life,” son Mark, who spoke on Angela’s behalf, said.

“I loved her like the younger sister I never had.”

Ms Leek’s brother David said they were like “best mates” while another brother, Geoff, recalled swimming and fishing together as kids.

Her family said Ms Leek’s love of greyhounds was second only to her love for great-niece Addyson, who was the “absolute love of her life.”

Ms Leek, 69, was caring for the five-year-old when she was killed.

“Picking up Addyson from daycare was the highlight of her day,” a statement read on behalf of Ms Leek’s family said.

“She would have done anything to put a smile on her face.”

The death shocked members of Ms Leek’s local Devon Meadows community and the wider greyhound racing family.

Ms Leek dedicated most of her life to her dogs and was an avid trainer and breeder and ran her own kennels.

Geoff Miles, from the Greyhound Owners, Trainers and Breeders Association, said Ms Leek’s “enormous experience” and big heart would be missed.

“Our industry is better for the careers she helped shape,” he said.

Ms Leek’s niece, Jessie Moore, 25, was charged with her aunt’s death earlier this month.
