Mum of MC from bus crash wedding says he was ‘covered with other people’s blood’

The wedding MC who was travelling on the bus involved in a horror crash in NSW has told his mother how he was “covered in other people’s blood” after the devastating tragedy.

Ten dead in Hunter Valley wedding bus crash

The master of ceremonies at the wedding of a former Melbourne couple whose guests were involved in a horror crash in the Hunter Valley told his mother the accident’s aftermath was like a “war scene”.

Alex Tigani, who was injured when the bus rolled, told his mother of the horrific events in a traumatic phone call in the early hours of Monday morning.

Loretta Tigani, from Geelong, told the Herald Sun her son called her about 3am “very upset” after witnessing his mates killed in the crash.

“They’re monitoring him for concussion, he was covered with other people’s blood,” Ms Tigani said.

It’s understood Mr Tigani knew the bride and groom through the local sporting scene in Singleton and through his work as Deputy Editor at the Hunter River Times.

“For him being the local reporter you get to know everyone,” Ms Tigani said.

“He was very emotional because he’s seen a lot of his mates die. It’s a small town so everybody knows each other.”

It’s understood those on the bus were a combination of people heading back to Singleton and guests from Melbourne.

Mr Tigani relayed to his mother the carnage when the bus toppled, with glass smashing and guests dragging the most injured of the victims to safety.

“He said it was like a war scene, it was devastating,” she said.

Mr Tigani, originally from Geelong, was sitting on the right hand side of the bus and sustained some bruising, his mother said.

“People on the left side of the bus are the ones that are hurt badly because that’s the side that it landed on,” she said.

Ms Tigani said she was aware the newlyweds were “devastated” and were recovering in a hotel.

“(Alex) knows so many people around there, he was asked to be MC,”

“He’s got a lot of connections with the friends and a lot of the wedding guests, as well.”

Geelong and District Football League president, Neville Whitley, said they had been left shocked by the tragedy.

Mr Tignani was a popular former media staffer for the local competition.

“It’s just horrific,” he said.

“We want to send out our thoughts to Alex and to everyone involved.

“It’s great that he has survived but obviously our hearts go out to all those who have lost their lives and to their families and friends.

“It is a terribly sad and shocking thing that has happened.”

Mr Whitley said the league would be offering “any support we can” as he recovers from the traumatic event.

“If he is in hospital we wish him all the best and we will be in touch with him as soon as we can.

“We wrap our arms around everyone that has contributed to the league, and he certainly did.

“He started off doing our media and was one that really progressed.”
