ALARM over global warming has failed to dampen enthusiasm for more major developments at Victoria’s most popular ski resort.

The Grollo Group plans a $35 million redevelopment of Mt Buller’s famous Kooroora Hotel to include apartments, backpacker accommodation and a nightclub.

A permit application for the five-storey project is before the state Planning Department and comes after another Grollo project, Whitehorse Village, was recently given the green light.

Dating to the 1950s, Kooroora is in the heart of the Mt Buller village and the redevelopment, including 59 units, a restaurant and shops, would transform the gateway precinct.

Asset development manager for Grollo Group subsidiary Groset, Martin Ansell, said the mountain was thriving in winter because an ever-expanding snow making system enhanced natural snow falls.

“This gives purchasers confidence to acquire a four season alpine holiday home,” he said.

Mr Ansell said that the Kooroora project would be a key pillar of the mountain’s long-term master plan and would include a hotel, significant retail, and a diverse range of units covering most price points.

“This development shows that Mt Buller is really the only alpine village in Australia which has such a great offering of new property on offer to buyers whom seem to be looking for just that,” he said.

Grollo’s Whitehorse Village, to be built next to the popular Bourke St run, will comprise a multi-million dollar hotel and up-market apartment complex featuring six three-level chalets.

The Grollo Group, owned by Rino Grollo and his family, also runs the Buller ski lift company.

Other developments planned for Mt Buller include a six-storey apartment building at New Summit Rd, and a four-level building with 12 units called The Whitt Apartments next to the Ski Club of Victoria.

Kooroora redevelopment architect firm is Interlandi Mantesso.
