Daniel Andrews has defended his infamous barbecue photograph with federal Opposition Leader Anthony Albanese amid speculation the shot was staged.
The Premier on Tuesday morning addressed rumours about the selfie, which were further fuelled by federal Liberal MP Jason Wood, who suggested it was nothing more than a “campaign-style photo op”.
Mr Wood took to Facebook to speculate about the post, arguing the shot was forced.
“When zoomed in the meat does not appear to have any char marks from the barbecue grill leading many to believe the photo was a ‘fake’,” he wrote.
“Also from personal experience, you don’t wear a suit jacket to a BBQ and when cooking you don’t wear a wool jumper.
“Is it two old mates catching up for a BBQ … or is it the photo opp of the year?”
But Mr Andrews hit back labelling the Assistant Minister for Customs, Community Safety and Multicultural Affairs a “joker”.
“The gas was on (and) searing a steak before you put it on the barbecue is not the most novel thing ever,” he said.
“The raw asparagus, I assure you we didn’t eat it raw. (And) it was windy and not that warm so that’s why I had a jumper on.”
Mr Andrews said Mr Wood, who represents the growing southeastern suburbs, including Berwick, Officer and Pakenham, should focus his time on more pressing matters.
“That joker Jason Wood, if I was him I’d be out campaigning given the way they are travelling at the moment, rather than being a commentating on my barbecuing skills,” he told reporters.
“I’m sure taxpayers are delighted that’s his biggest contribution to the federal parliament. What a joker he is.”
