Mother gets intervention order after school bully threatens daughter

A MOTHER fearing for her daughter because of a school bully has taken out an intervention order after teachers locked the girl in a classroom for protection.

Cyber bullying increase prompts tough new laws

TEACHERS are locking a girl, 12, in a classroom to hide her from a bully looking to “beat the sh--” out of her.

The girl’s mother so fears for her daughter’s safety at the northeastern suburbs school that she has taken out an emergency intervention order.

But the bully, who is in state care, merely posted the order on social media, commenting that the girl should kill herself “or I’ll kill u”.

And when an interim intervention order was granted last week, she posted that “a piece of paper … not gonna stop me from touching u”.

The mother will now seek a full intervention order, forcing the bully to stay 200m from her daughter.

She says while the restrictions will create a problem for staff, she wants the school and the Department of Health and Human Services to be “held to account”.

“The school’s safety plan is when (the bully) posts on social media that she’s going to come and attack my daughter, they put her in a room with locked doors,” the mother said.

“My daughter was in that room for three hours — they did not call the police, either.

“She (the bully) put an order served on her by the police on social media with the words, ‘die you f---in b----’.

“She’s running around violent, her behaviour is escalating … I am actually concerned for my daughter’s safety.”

It is understood the bully has had a troubled childhood. Both parents are in prison, she has been placed in state residential care, and has attended school for only a few weeks of the year.

The victim’s mother said she also feared for the future of the bully, who she said had been “exposed to things no 12-year-old should have been”.

“It’s tragic all the way around but at the end of the day, DHHS are the ones basically breaching their duty of care because ultimately she’s their responsibility,” she said.

“If my child was truant almost every day of the term, I’d have DHHS on my doorstep.”

The DHHS said it couldn’t comment on individual cases.

But a spokesman said “young people in out-of-home care have complex histories”.

“For some young people who experience trauma and abuse, they may engage in high-risk activities and take time to engage in support services designed to address their trauma and needs,” he said.

“The Department works with schools, doctors and other service providers to help give a co-ordinated response to the needs of children.”

A Department of Education and Training spokesman said it had been “working closely with the school and DHHS to support them and ensure that the approach taken is supportive and appropriate”.

“Schools occasionally face complex situations and do everything they can to ensure all students are kept safe,” he said.

“Student safety is our number one priority.”
