MAJOR traffic disruptions are expected at a landmark city intersection from Monday as works to fortify Flinders Street Station against terror attacks begin.
The dedicated left-turn lane from St Kilda Rd will be removed, and the pedestrian crossing outside the police box that leads to the tram stop and Fed Square will be temporarily shut, to allow the installation of more than 50 permanent bollards.

CBD DELAYS WARNING DUE TO METRO
One of two remaining right turn lanes from St Kilda Rd will be changed so drivers can also turn left.
Initial works will be complete by mid December but there will be more next year.
It comes after one of Flinders St’s three westbound lanes was last month shut for up to four years owing to Metro Tunnel works.
Lord Mayor Sally Capp said while most construction would be completed at night to reduce the impact on traders and pedestrians some daytime activity may be required.
“We want to get these vital security works done as quickly as possible and keep disruption to a minimum and I thank Melburnians in advance for their patience,’’ Cr Capp said.
“Not only will these works increase safety, they’ll also provide significant new public space at one of the city’s busiest pedestrian intersections.”
The overhaul will create 130sqm of extra forecourt space outside Flinders Street Station while the pedestrian crossing to the Young & Jackson hotel — used by more than 25,000 pedestrians at peak times — will be widened by 3m but won’t close for works.
A total of 53 stainless steel bollards will be installed.
Victoria Police Assistant Commissioner Stephen Leane said: “This work is vital to improving the safety of the thousands of Victorians using the roads, footpaths and pedestrian crossings around the intersection of Flinders and Swanston streets every day.”
“Pedestrians will be temporarily directed to alternative crossings while the works are underway,’’ Mr Leane said.
“If you’re driving through the CBD, plan ahead and allow extra time to travel along Flinders St.”
The works — to commence Monday night — are part of a $50 million security upgrade of Melbourne’s CBD in the wake of last year’s Bourke St attack in which six people were killed.
Further works to include a new traffic signal, additional work on the forecourt, road resurfacing and installation of a bike lane will begin in early January and continue until March.
Permanent bollards will also be installed on Princes Bridge.
There will be no works between December 15 and January 5 to reduce affecting Christmas and New Year’s Eve activities.
