Proposed Mordialloc Bypass to be upgraded to four-lane freeway

PREMIER Daniel Andrews says there will be no move to toll the Mordialloc Bypass project as multimillion-dollar plans to upgrade the road to a four-lane freeway were unveiled.

THE Mordialloc Bypass project will be upgraded to a four-lane freeway by the Andrews Government.

The new road will run along the same route but be traffic light-free to allow commuters to get home sooner.

The freeway will connect the Mornington Peninsula Freeway at Springvale Road in Aspendale Gardens to the Dingley Bypass in Dingley Village — creating a continuous freeway from Frankston to Clayton.

A new interchange will also be built at Thames Promenade, making it easier for drivers to access the new freeway.

The new road is expected to ease congestion on roads like the Nepean Highway, Boundary Road, Wells Road, Westall Road and Springvale Road.

The announcement today includes an additional $75 million boost to the project in the 18/19 Budget, bringing the new total to $375 million.

Mr Andrews said the change was about “giving local roads back to locals”.

“A number of traffic lights will be removed that really congested ... this is all about getting people home faster, getting people home safer,” he said.

“This is a great announcement and an important boost to an already significant announcement.”

Mr Andrews said the final $75 million and extended plan was the result of intense work in the last 12 months.

Construction will begin in 2019 and finish in 2021.

Roads Minister Luke Donnellan said traffic volumes in the corridor were expected to double in the future justifying the project.

Up to 80,000 vehicles are expected to use the new road by 2031.

Local members Paul Edbrooke, Tim Richardson and Sonya Kilkenny were all at the announcement.

They are among Labor MPs in the most marginal seats in Victoria.

Mr Andrews denied the project was not about garnering votes at the election it was about “getting things done”.

The EES process will begin in September and finish in March.

Mr Andrews confirmed there will be no move to toll the new road. Before work on the road started last year, local groups were raising concern over the environmental impacts on the wetlands.

Meanwhile Opposition Leader Matthew Guy visited Parkdale and pledged to stop the proposed narrowing on Beach Rd between Mentone and Mordialloc.

“On Saturday morning, one lane on Beach Rd will just be a complete disaster,” Mr Guy said.

“We should be improving our road network not narrowing roads to make it harder and less safe for those living in communities like Bayside.”
