Moon Dog Craft Brewery to open fifth venue, Moon Dog Beach Club, in Frankston

Hot on the heels of its Footscray and Docklands openings, Melbourne brewery Moon Dog will add another venue to its fast-growing empire, with Moon Dog Beach Club set to open before Christmas.

Melbourne craft brewery Moon Dog has a sea change in its sights for the latest chapter of its fast-growing empire.

A beach themed bar and brewery is set to open in Frankston this summer, marking the third Victorian venue the independent brewer has opened this year.

Hot on the heels of a Wild West themed brewery in the old Franco Cozzo building in Footscray in April and a 1500 person venue at Docklands this month, a 2000 sqm space will add cheer to Frankston.

The Herald Sun got a sneak peek at Moon Dog Beach Club, which will have a beer garden with bay views, cabana huts, live music stage, four bars, a children’s playground, function space and daybeds.

Moon Dog co-founder Karl Van Buuren said the new venue at 490 Nepean Highway would give off Bali beach vibes and be open before Christmas.

“We will definitely be open by the end of the year, so there will be plenty of time to sit in the venue and enjoy a beer under the sun this summer,’’ he said.

Mr Van Buuren said the business had long held a goal to set up in Melbourne’s south east.

“It just sort of encompasses such a large number of people and suburbs and it’s an absolute bustling city, Frankston,’’ he said.

“So it was an obvious choice for us and we’re actually very excited about it.’’

While a growing list of Aussie craft breweries have gone bust since Covid, Moon Dog’s Frankston venture will mark its growth to five venues, joining Moon Dog OG in Abbotsford, Moon Dog World in Preston and the new Footscray and Docklands locations.

“People just seem to resonate with what we’re trying to do here, which is just to provide a really fun experience,’’ he said.

“We’ve been around for 14 years now.

“We started off in a small warehouse in Abbotsford, opened up our first bar 10 years ago and since then we’ve just had this kind of organic growth.

“We’ve grown with our customer base, with our fans and the people who drink our beers.’’

He credited their success with “pushing the envelope of fun’’, both in terms of beers and venues.

And he revealed they were not finished yet, with plans for even more venues in the future.

“We’ve got some more irons in the fire but I think we’ve done some really good venues this year,’’ he said.

“We’ve opened up Footscray, Docklands, we’ve packed a lot in this year … from what we’ve heard people are really excited for us to be an addition to Frankston and we’re really excited to be added to the community.’’
