Monash Uni lecturer Elliot Dolan-Evans accused of ‘glorifying’ Hamas October 7 attack

Jewish students have accused a Monash University lecturer of glorifying Hamas’ attack on Israel, with concerns raised about his social media activity.

A Monash University lecturer has been accused of “glorifying terrorists” and praising Hamas’ October 7 massacre.

Multiple Jewish students at the leading university have raised concerns about lecturer Elliot Dolan-Evans after the academic liked and reposted a series of “atrocious” social media posts following the October 7 massacre.

Just hours after Hamas terrorists burst into southern Israel murdering 1200 Israelis, raping young women and mutilating children, Dr Dolan-Evans liked a post on X, formerly Twitter, by the Victorian Socialists urging “solidarity to the Palestinian resistance”.

Two days later, the academic – who wears a keffiyeh in his profile picture – liked another tweet, referring to the October 7 massacre as “the most successful Palestinian operation in decades”.

Another troubling post liked by Dr Dolan-Evans that was published on October 7 appeared to glorify Leila Khaled, a member of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine – a proscribed terrorist organisation in the US and EU.

According to his online biography, Dr Dolan-Evans is a lecturer in the Faculty of Law and an assistant lecturer in the Faculty of Medicine.

Students also raised concerns about several reposts, including one that described the Israeli Defence Force’s bombardment of Rafah in Gaza “a holocaust”.

One Jewish student, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, said the lecturer’s “horrifying” views online proved he was “unfit” to teach Jewish students.

“He liked these posts as my friends in Israel hid in bomb shelters, as their friends were murdered by Hamas,” he told the Herald Sun.

“Offering ‘solidarity’ with Hamas and liking posts portraying Hamas as heroic resistance fighters while they were in the process of murdering, raping and kidnapping as many Jewish people as they could is horrifying glorification and a clear indication that he is unfit to be charged with the care of Jewish students.”

Another Jewish student, who is in her third year at Monash University, described his views on social media as “atrocious” and “dangerous”.

“He’s glorifying terrorists while educating young adults,” she said.

“If a lecturer, if a person in authority, is allowed to purport these views, it enables others to do the same.”

She noted it was “more than likely” that he would have Jewish students.

Zionist Federation of Australia president Jeremy Leibler, who is an alumnus of Monash Law, said it was “appalling” to think students are being taught by someone who appears to view the massacre as a “successful Palestinian operation”.

“I wonder what John Monash – a proud Australian, Jew, and founder of the Zionist Federation of Australia – would think of this lecturer who on Twitter is celebrating one of the deadliest massacres of Jews,” he said.

Dr Dolan-Evans was contacted for comment.

A Monash Univeristy spokesman said the university was reviewing the social media posts.

“The University is presently reviewing the posts made in a private capacity to determine whether they are in breach of University policies or procedures,” she said.

“We remain committed to ensuring all spaces are safe for the community.”
