Missy Higgins reveals she’s laying low in ‘crazy, crazy times’

Singer-songwriter Missy Higgins has taken to social media to update fans on her family’s health after her doctor dad was diagnosed with coronavirus.

Coronavirus infected GP who treated patients 'deserves an apology'

Australian singer Missy Higgins says she is healthy and well but is “laying low anyway” since her father Dr Chris Higgins contracted coronavirus.

In a social media post on Thursday, Higgins said it had been “crazy, crazy times” since it was confirmed last Saturday that her father had tested positive.

“Given the amount of misinformation out there at the moment, I just wanted to let you all know that our little family is completely healthy and fine,” she wrote alongside a picture of her and her daughter.

“We’ve been told none of us are at risk of having caught it but we’re laying low anyway just because people seem to be freaking out around us nonetheless!”

In her post she thanked people for the support she and her father had received.

“There is a lot of fear around. Feels a little like the world is going bonkers and the media isn’t helping with that. But my dad has received such an outpouring of support and love from the public, especially from the medical community, so our main emotion right now is gratitude and relief.”

“Anyway I’m staying off social media for a while for obvious reasons, but I wanted to give you all a bit of an update and let you know we really, really appreciate all the support, it makes a big difference!

“Sending lots of love to you all, don’t stress about your poo tickets and be kind to each other”.

The post comes after Higgins pulled out of her performance at a bushfire charity show at The Forum in Melbourne on Sunday night.

Higgins was due to appear alongside other musicians but made a last-minute cancellation.

The withdrawal was announced on stage by event host American singer Amanda Palmer, who said Higgins sent her a text on Saturday night with a link to a news story about her father and the comment: “things are crazy, I can’t come tomorrow”.

As a tribute to Higgins, Palmer got the crowd to record a shout-out video saying “we love you Missy and Missy’s dad”.

Higgins’ father had called for an apology from Health Minister Jenny Mikakos over what he claimed were “unfair” and “inaccurate” comments.

Dr Higgins also accused Ms Mikakos of using his case for “political grandstanding”.

However the minister refused to say sorry for her comments.

In a press conference on Monday while praising the work of doctors and nurses, Ms Mikakos resisted calls to apologise.

“I’ve reached out to the GP involved and … my thoughts are with him,” Ms Mikakos said.

“I wish him a speedy recovery. My thoughts are with his patients.

“But we will not deviate from our absolute focus, and that is a public health emergency, and making sure the Victorians get access to information they need.”
