MICK MOLLOY SAYS THE FRONT BAR WILL KICK ON DESPITE REVITALISED FOOTY SHOW ON NINE
With Tiger blood coursing through his veins, the lifelong Richmond supporter is pondering what it would be like to taste September glory.
And should Richmond complete the fairytale with a Grand Final victory on the last Saturday in September, The Front Bar host has his celebratory plans sorted.
“I am going to get a premiership tattoo on my chest and walk around topless for a year,” Molloy said.
“It will mean everything to me. It is the missing piece of the puzzle. It is the last childhood thing we are allowed to do. I have been going to the football my entire life and I just want to see it (Richmond win a Grand Final). I will go berserk.”
A passionate club supporter, Molloy has nursed hope and tempered frustration as Richmond has lobbed along.
“Long suffering is almost redundant when you are referring to Richmond fans. I think it is generally acknowledged that we are,” he said.
“People always say to me if we are ever any good the fans will come out of the woodwork. “Well, we are the worst performed side of the last 30 years yet we have the biggest supporter base.
“I have always said I love my life — I love my family, I love my friends, I love my partner, I love my job, I am good at it, I am well paid. But that football club has just about ruined the whole thing.
“I remember not wanting to go to the Logies once because Richmond was playing Geelong.
“I was really cranky because I did not want to go to the Logies. When I got there I got the half time scores and Geelong were up by 100 points and I have never been happier to be at the Logies in all my life.”
But after years of false hope he believes 2017 could finally be the reward he and other diehard supporters have been waiting for.
“I just have a good feeling about this year, mind you I have had this for the last 37 years,’’ he said.
“I hope they can do it. Do I dare to dream? I don’t know, but we are getting close.”
Molloy has been immersed in footy this year, hosting Channel Seven’s surprise hit, The Front Bar, with Sam Pang and Andy Maher.
It was the success of the show that ultimately led to Eddie McGuire returning as co-host of a depleted Footy Show on Nine.
“When we designed our show we never designed it to go up against The Footy Show,” Molloy said.
“We tried to create the vibe that exists in my lounge room on a Friday night or down the pub of an afternoon.
“We are fans. This is a show designed by fans for fans who sit in their own room and thump the table and have a genuinely one-eyed view of what football is all about. I think we reach and touch people who see themselves as one of us.”
