Metro have stood down three train controllers after they tested positive for alcohol and drug screening at work.

Staff working in the city’s main control centre on Thursday tested positive to either alcohol or cannabis and have been suspended with pay while the operator investigates further.

“Our number one priority is the safety of all of our passengers and staff,” a Metro spokesman said.

“Metro takes a zero-tolerance approach to drugs and alcohol in the workplace — and this policy applies to everyone from our executives to our frontline teams.”

Staff working for Metro are regularly tested for alcohol and drugs, with positive results sent to a lab for conformation.

The operator will discipline the staff if it finds they have breached their company policy but it has not yet been determined whether they could lose their jobs.

A round of testing was triggered after an incident in which train moved unsafely while under maintenance.

RTBU state secretary Luba Grigorovitch said the union would wait for due-process to take place before casting judgement.

“It is disgraceful that details of such allegations have been reported to the media prior to members having the opportunity to a fair trial,” she said.

“This is a serious and sensitive matter.”
