Authorities are urging motorists to slow down and maintain a greater distance between them and the vehicle in front.

A burst water main has closed Burke Road in both directions at Deepdene with emergency services at the scene.

Showers began falling in the city early this morning with 1.2mm recorded in the city so far with Epping recording 7mm, the Bureau of Meteorology has said.

The rainy weather has ended a 41-day dry spell but more intense wet weather is unlikely, forecaster Dean Stewart said.

“The showers today are likely to clear so it will be a dry afternoon and there will be some breaks in the cloud,” Mr Stewart said.

A shower or two with a top of 21C is forecast for Melbourne today.

The weather will warm up later in the week with a top of 26C forecast for Friday, 32C on Saturday and a hot 35C on Sunday.
