Melbourne will host Presidents Cup golf tournament in 2028, 2040

The world’s top golfers will again converge on Melbourne after the city secured hosting rights for two more Presidents Cup tournaments.

Victoria has secured the Presidents Cup in 2028 and 2040, with the prestigious golf event to be held somewhere in Melbourne’s sandbelt suburbs.

Major Events Minister Martin Pakula on Thursday revealed a new agreement between the state and the PGA Tour.

The biennial tournament will bring some of the world’s best golfers to Victoria in a deal expected to attract thousands of sports tourists and boost the state’s economy.

The 2028 event will be the fourth Presidents Cup in Melbourne — the city previously hosted in 1998, 2011 and 2019, attracting elite players such as Tiger Woods, Jack Nicklaus, Jason Day and Adam Scott.

The official venue will be announced later.

“Securing two more Presidents Cups is a real coup for Melbourne, promoting our city to the world and providing a boost for tourism and jobs,” Mr Pakula said.

“The PGA tour joins the likes of the Australian Open, Formula One, T20 Cricket World Cup and Super Rugby in choosing our world-class facilities for their international events.”

Premier Daniel Andrews, who is an avid golfer, said the Presidents Cup was “one of the great international events”.

“To showcase the sandbelt, a unique golfing precinct to the world, that’s all about tourism,” he said.

“As excited as you might get as a golfer, yes that’s important, but it’s all about jobs.

“The fact that there’s not been a venue nominated, I would say to you that’s proof positive that the sandbelt has many different options when it comes to running a tournament of this scale and size.

“There are some places that wouldn’t have one option, let alone three or four, and we certainly do.”

PGA tour commissioner Jay Monahan said Australia and Melbourne had been a passionate fanbase for the event since 1998.

“As the event continues to visit new corners of the globe, we remain committed to a presence in Melbourne and the sandbelt region, a place our players and fans around the world hold in high regard.”

No other city outside of the United States has hosted the event four times since it was first held in Gainesville, Virginia in 1994.

The event has returned to Gainesville three times, and internationally has been held in South Africa, Canada, and South Korea.

The Presidents Cup is played every two years and is a showdown between the best 12 players from the US and an International team, which represents the rest of the world, excluding Europe.

Through 13 stagings of the event, starting in 1994, the mighty Americans have won 11 times.

The event is one of a string of international events headed for Victoria, which landed the 2026 Commonwealth Games hosting rights this week.

This year’s Bledisloe Cup clash will also head to Melbourne.

It comes after the Australian Grand Prix roared back to life last weekend, with a record four-day crowd of 419,114 people.
