A history of Melbourne

THESE Melbourne suburbs share their names with some high profile international places.

So do our local versions live up to their overseas counterparts?

WINDSOR

The Royal Borough of Windsor in the UK is a far cry from the hipster Windsor of Melbourne known for its cafe culture and a foodies first stop for Instagramable grub. While the UK version is known for the famous Windsor Castle, Melbourne also has a Windsor Castle, but it’s an eclectic pub a the end of dead end road off Chapel St, not quite worthy of royalty, but still great for a Saturday night bevvy.

DALLAS

Dallas, Texas hit the history books as the city where president John F. Kennedy was assassinated and the thriving metropolis boasts the 10th largest economy in the world.

But don’t worry Dallas in Melbourne has a charcoal chicken AND a fish and chip shop.

This is what you get when you Google Dallas Melbourne. We’ll just leave it there.

BRIGHTON

A gorgeous seaside town in the UK, Brighton is a gorgeous bayside suburb in Melbourne.

The British Brighton is a one-hour trip from London with regency-era buildings and a famous pier with arcade games and amusements, a popular hotspot for day trippers.

Brighton in Victoria is the affluent home of activewear loving ladies hitting the local cafes with pooches in tow and boasts some of Melbourne’s most expensive real estate with water views.
It’s sometimes known as “Toorak by the sea” but if you’re going to use its proper name it has to be said with a proper snobby drawl. Where are you from? “Briiiiiiiiighton”.

BROOKLYN

Brooklyn is a small Melbourne suburb wedged between Sunshine West and Altona North. It’s a far cry from the bustle of big city Brooklyn in New York, known for it’s burgeoning arts, culture and coffee scene. One of the most famous neighbourhoods in New York, Brooklyn is home to Prospect Park, a killer live music scene, the trendy town of Williamsburg and “America’s Playground” Coney Island. Our little ol’ Brooklyn has a long way to go before it can compete.

ARTHURS SEAT

If you’re looking for a great spot for picturesque views of Edinburgh, then Arthurs Seat in Scotland is the place to go. If you’re looking for picturesque views of the Mornington Penninsula, then Arthurs Seat in Victoria is where you should park yourself. Who didn’t take a trip to the Arthurs Seat chairlift when they were little? Well it’s reopened and has a brand new name — the Arthurs Seat Eagle. Make the trip and fly high over the peninsula.

BRUNSWICK

This inner suburb of Melbourne is hipster heartland where you can pull up a milk crate and sip on your magic (a three-quarter flat white with one and a half shots, for the first-timers), or if you’re more of a night owl you can hit one of Brunswick’s oh-so-left-of-centre-trendy bars and knock back a designer beer in a bottle.

Melbourne’s own hipster capital shares it’s name with the 250,000 plus people in Germany who call Braunschweig (Brunwsick in English) home and it boasts some stunning historical architecture.

KENSINGTON

Kensington is one of London’s most affluent suburbs and houses the royal residence Kensington Palace, home to Prince William and Kate Middleton, along with their two children Prince George and Princess Charlotte.

Kensington in Melbourne is a genteel suburb in the otherwise noisy inner west, surrounded by Flemington, North Melbourne and Footscray. It’s known for and loved by the locals for it’s “village-feel”, while only 4kms from Melbourne’s bustling CBD. Melburnians who live there claim they’ll never leave.

HEIDELBERG

Home to the Austin Hospital and the childhoods of AFL footballers Brent Stanton and Heath and Rhyce Shaw, Heidelberg in Melbourne has experienced rapid growth and redevelopment in recent years, with real estate prices on the rise. Several million dollars were reportedly poured into local shopping strip Burgundy St to give it a total revamp. Sharing a name with the picturesque town of Heidelberg in Germany, the European version is a popular tourist destination as visitors flock to see the Old Town, Philosopher’s Way and Heidelberg Castle.

CANTERBURY

Canterbury in Melbourne is one of our cities most expensive suburbs, with leafy green streets and some of Victoria’s most exclusive private schools. Maling Rd in Canterbury is a famous vintage shopping strip, known to be frequented by Aussie pop superstar Kylie Minogue and sister Dannii when they were younger and living in nearby Camberwell. Also a region in New Zealand, Canterbury has the country’s highest mountain and its largest city, Christchurch, is a popular tourist spot.

HAMPTON

Melbourne’s bayside suburb of Hampton also shares a version of its name with a seaside town in New York State, The Hamptons. Both are playgrounds for the wealthy, with The Hamptons in the U.S. featuring some of the country’s most luxurious properties. While the median house price for Hampton in Melbourne is around $1.7 million, The Hamptons median house price is one of the most expensive in the U.S. at $8.5 million, according to Business Insider.
