Melbourne shopping centres extend trade hours for Xmas

IF YOU still haven’t finished your Christmas shopping, the clock is ticking to get it done.
Shopping centres and retailers are extending their trading hours to make sure you get all the trimmings and presents to put under the tree.

More than 200,000 shoppers are expected to visit Chadstone Shopping Centre during the annual 34-hour trade period which kicks off on Saturday at 8am until 6pm on Christmas Eve.
Chadstone general manager Fiona Mackenzie said there was a festive buzz in the shopping centre and it wasn’t pandemonium as people may expect.
“It is really important to offer the extended hours. People’s lives are so busy we need to accommodate their busy schedules,” she said.
Westfield Highpoint will also stay open from 9am on December 23 until 5pm on Christmas Eve while other centres have extended their trading hours for the festive season.
Westfield regional manager of centre experience Charlie Rimmer said millions of people were expected to step foot in Westfield’s Victorian shopping centres in the days before Christmas.
“Christmas is our busiest time of the year and this year is no exception,” Mr Rimmer said.
“To help with this we’re opening earlier and closing later, offering flexibility for our customers who are looking to shop at a time that suits them.”
He suggested making a list and checking it twice to take advantage of the extended hours.
The centres will be shut on Christmas Day with Boxing Day the next chance to shop.
Aussies are expected to spend more than $50 billion this Christmas period between November 15 and December 24, according to ARA and Roy Morgan Research predictions.
