The freezing temperatures are due to a low-pressure system slowly moving across the eastern third of the country, bringing icy mornings and even colder nights.

It comes after Melbourne previously had its second lowest temperature overnight of 3.6C on Tuesday. The coldest before this was on Saturday at 4.1C.

Coldstream – 36 km northeast of Melbourne – recorded a significant low of -3.9C on Tuesday. It hasn’t been this cold in Coldstream since August 2018.

Melbourne will reach 13C on Wednesday with partly cloudy conditions before plummeting overnight again to 4C.

Thursday and Friday will see maximum temperatures of 13C, followed by 14C on Saturday and Sunday.

Thursday and Friday will likely see light showers of up to 1mm in the city.

Some regional Victorian residents said it was so cold it “hurt to breathe”.

“When the news is talking about how cold Melbourne is this morning I’m going to be thinking about my weather in regional Victoria this morning, it hurts to breathe,” one user wrote online.
