MELBOURNE goes mad in March with an unprecedented number of international and local sporting, fashion, food and cultural events.

Celebrations begin in style tonight with the VIP launch of the Virgin Australia Melbourne Fashion Festival at Government House, quickly followed by the Australian International Air Show at Avalon from Friday.

Grand Prix preparation is in full swing for the big Formula one race on March 26, while the AFL men’s competition kicks off when Carlton and Richmond go head to head at the MCG on March 23.

The Australian Ballet production of Faster runs from March 17 for 10 days, while the Melbourne International Flower and Garden show and Melbourne International Comedy Festival, both beginning March 29, and the Melbourne Food and Wine Festival, starting March 31, finish off the massive month.

David Jones ambassador Jesinta Franklin, who will be walking in the department store’s VAMFF show, said she loved to be in Melbourne in March.

“I love that Melbourne truly embraces fashion, sport, food and the flower show. There’s such a diversity of events,” she said.

“People really get behind it. The first female footy match is a testament to that.”

Flight Lieutenant Andrew Robinson said there was no greater thrill than flying with the Roulettes at the air show.

“It’s the biggest event on our calendar. We feed off the crowd; flying above them, we see how big it is,” he said.

Racing car driver Steven Richards, who has driven at the Grand Prix since 1996, said the crowds drove him every year as well. “It’s just the greatest atmosphere,” he said.

MoVida chef and owner Frank Camorra said March was the best time to be in Melbourne for the weather and all the events on show.

“That’s the great thing about Melbourne, there is always something going on but in March it’s kicked up a notch.”

Carlton ruckman Matthew Kreuzer said the AFL season opener was always an exciting game to be a part of. “It’s always great to play these games, it’s even better when we win,” he said.

Collingwood AFLW star Moana Hope is hoping her team can make it to the Grand Final on March 25.

“The second half of the season is where all the big games happen leading into the finals.

“I love the footy and I love food and wine when I’m not playing footy, and I’m a sucker for fashion, so March is going to be a great month.”
