This mother and daughter duo are saddling up to take on Australia’s most prestigious women’s riding event, tackling the fabled Garryowen together.

This year in its 91st edition, the Garryowen will once again showcase the very best of female equestrian talent at the Royal Melbourne Show.

Founded in 1934, the competition honours the life trailblazing rider Violet Murrell, who tragically died after gallantly trying to save her horse, Garryowen, from a stable fire.

This year mother Susan Bufton and daughter Hannah Bufton are both taking it on.

The pair have longed for this moment since they were young, calling it “every girl’s dream”.

“It is the most prestigious horse riding event in Australia and just to be out there and be a part of it together will be super special,” said Susan.

In Hannah’s youth, the pair would compete together but stopped as she grew older.

Hannah has gone on to receive much acclaim in the field and in 2020 was named the Equestrian Victoria Young Ambassador of the Year.

At last year’s Barastoc Horse of the Year show, “Staughton Vale Henley — ridden by Susan — was the champion in one of the classes.

This year the Staughton Vale pair will reunite on the competition ground, both striving for that prestigious title but with the added support of each other.

They plan to celebrate with a glass of bubbly.

Show attendees can catch the couple on the main stage on Friday at 9.30am.
