Controversial Melbourne Magistrate Richard Pithouse has resigned after he was stood down by the Judicial Commission of Victoria in February.
Victoria’s Chief Magistrate Justice Lisa Hannan confirmed on Saturday that Mr Pithouse had resigned from his role, but no official reason for the decision was provided.
Mr Pithouse has been marred in controversy after it was revealed he made comments suggesting a rape victim had “buyer’s remorse” back in October 2018.
The former Melbourne Magistrate had come under fire more recently after the Commissin received multiple complaints regarding his in-court conduct earlier this year, leading to his subsequent demotion.
An examination into the incident revealed that Mr Pithouse remanded a mother of a special-needs child into custody for a minor charge, allegedly basing the decision on her “attitude”.
The judiciary watchdog also received complaints in September 2022, where it was recommended that he be stood down, with the commission highlighting concerns about his behaviour and impartiality.
