The racially motivated posts and comments on the Manningham major’s Facebook and Twitter pages have upset but not deterred the Chinese Australian candidate.
One commenter said she was “not European enough”.
Another said: ”All diversity seems to mean is less white people! I’m bloody over it.”
Ms Yang has reported the comments to the social media sites and posted a response on her Facebook page.
“My diverse background, like the diverse backgrounds of people across our great city, has helped Melbourne become the successful, global city it is today,” Ms Yang wrote.
“Despite these attacks, I will continue to campaign to preserve, protect and enhance Melbourne’s reputation as one of the most vibrant multicultural communities in the world,”
On Friday far-right political Twitter account NatAlt posted a link to the mayoral candidate’s Facebook page and asked it’s followers to “leave a rating”.
The Nationalist Alternative twitter page claims to “want to restore the sovereignty of the Australian nation by affirming Australian cultural and national identity.”
