FORGET the humble sandwich. These Instagram accounts of some of Melbourne’s most active foodies will make you drool and your stomach rumble.

This committed breed of Instagrammers rarely dines without a camera in hand, making it their business to document their dining experiences in local restaurants and cafes.

Don’t be mistaken — these aren’t everyday photos of someone’s lunch. These inspiring shots will make you stop whatever you’re doing and seek out the nearest foodie haven. Tell us your thoughts, below.

THE PLATE PROJECT

JUST when you thought lavender was something your grandma told you to put under your pillow to help you sleep better, here it is in a salad. This delicious ensemble made its way into the tummy of @theplateproject, an Instagrammer with 5000 followers who prides themselves on ‘finding Melbourne deliciousness one plate at a time’. With more than 300 posts of meals that look like art, this Instagrammer contends that happiness depends on a good breakfast, “even if it’s the afternoon”.

LITTLE—MISS—MUESLI

THIS is muesli as you’ve never seen it before. A Melbourne girl who confesses to being ‘mad for muesli’ has built a social media account paying homage to the typical breakfast dish, decorated in all the colours of a rainbow. Heaping praise on dishes that are full of flavour and ‘tones of texture’, her 3000 followers can rest assured of her exacting standards. “An absence of heavy nuts and dried fruit meant that there was very limited crunch or chew to be had,” she writes in one post. Who would’ve thought a humble plate of oats could inspire such devotion?

WHEN you need a sugar hit but your standard chocolate bar just doesn’t cut it, this peanut butter ice cream sandwich might do. “This is one of the best desserts I’ve ever had,” chirps melbournefoodnotes, who instagrams their Melbourne food experiences to more than 600 followers. Further, why should one settle for soggy weeties when you can have a gluten-free start to the day, any time of day, with a poached egg perched on some rosti and sprinkled with candied walnuts? In further good news, “the rosti wasn’t oily either!”

DISHIN_ITOUT

CHICKEN sprinkled with mussel dust? A ricotta doughnut complemented by chilli raspberry? Yes, it’s true. Melbourne-based food blogger @dishin_itout gives these creative dishes the thumbs up to a following of more than 3000 food lovers who can only weep at this beautiful array of images lovingly snapped at the city’s cafes and restaurants.

ALEX TSANG

LATTE? Not just any latte. Make sure it’s a matcha latte. But not just any matcha latte. We’re talking the highest grade organic matcha, the finest of the finely ground powder of Japanese green tea. This self-confessed Melbourne food and coffee geek, @tsanga85, has almost 3000 instagrammers following his culinary journey.
