Melbourne CBD retailers join forces for a Christmas shopping extravaganza

CHRISTMAS shopping will take a fabulously fun twist tomorrow when Melbourne CBD’s major shopping precincts joining forces for the annual Shop the City.

Shoppers wanting to get into the Christmas spirit can visit a tinsel room decked out with colourful walls where they can take fun, silly season snaps with sparkly props.

Shop the City, a year-round collaboration for CBD centres Melbourne Central, Emporium Melbourne, QV Melbourne, The Strand Melbourne and Melbourne’s GPO, will launch their Christmas campaign Wednesday with a 12-hour sales extravaganza, offering consumers more than 300 exclusive offers and discounts.

Kate Rooney, Shop The City spokesperson, says with more than 1000 shops across three city blocks, shoppers will receive even more joy this year, with extended trading hours, shopping experiences and events in the lead up to Christmas.

GRINCH COUNCILS DOING IT CHEAP

“We’re expecting Shop the City will attract 30% more customers this Wednesday, compared to usual weekday trade, with 1000 retailers coming together across three city blocks for the shopping event,” she says.

“According to the Australian Retailers Association and Roy Morgan Research, Victorian’s will spend more than $12.7 billion on pre-Christmas shopping this year with more than $50 billion to be spent nationally.”

Lord Mayor Robert Doyle says Shop The City gives shoppers the opportunity to save money and experience Christmas in the world’s most liveable city.

“Christmas is the most important time of year for our retailers. That is why the City of Melbourne has invested a record $5.4 million to support city businesses during this critical trading period,” he says.
