TWO more Melbourne laneways are set to become smoke-free as the council pushes to clear the city’s air of passive smoking.
Fulham Place and Collins Way in the CBD will join a list of eight other locations as being free of smoke, if city councillors back the latest proposal.
PUSH FOR SMOKING BAN IN OUTDOOR DRINKING AREAS
OUTDOOR AREAS RESERVED FOR SMOKING
The move comes after a council-commissioned survey found 61 per cent of visitors and 68 per cent of local businesses supported the idea.
Fulham Place runs off Flinders Lane and is known to many Melburnians as the location for eateries Vapiano and Huxtaburger.
Collins Way runs off Lt Collins St, between Swanston and Queen streets.
Councillor Beverley Pinder said tobacco caused an estimated 15,500 deaths in Australia every year.
“The expansion of smoke-free areas to another two CBD sites will help to ensure we reduce the harms associated with second-hand smoke,” Cr Pinder said.
“We have already increased the number of smoke-free areas across the municipality, from QV and Goldsbrough Lane to popular running tracks The Tan and Princes Park.”
The other smoke-free zones are in The Causeway, Howey Place, Equitable Place and Block Place.
Smoking on the Tan and Princes Park running tracks was banned in 2015.
Smoking in outdoor dining areas was banned across Victoria on July 1 last year.
Councillors will consider the latest proposal at a Future Melbourne Committee meeting on Tuesday.
