A NEW hipster food trend has burst into Melbourne cafes.
Rainbow toasties will be hot off the (sandwich) presses at Moorabbin cafe 8 Seeds from tomorrow.
Owner Murat Demirkol said the phenomenon was already a hit overseas.
“It’s in Hong Kong and LA,” he said.
“Now we’re the first place that we know of in Australia to sell them.”
The treat is made from a food-coloured, gooey mozzarella blend.
Mr Demirkol said his colleague Fee Akdogan came up with the idea.
“We saw the rainbow latte and thought: ‘can we do something with rainbow?’” he said.
The toastie connoisseurs thought they’d take advantage of the rainbow food trend while it was still popular.
“It’s one of those things you’ll never know unless you try it,” Mr Demirkol said.
“Whether its sells is the million dollar question. We’ll see how it goes and if people love it we’ll keep it on the menu.”
As for the taste, the boys have stuck to a simple recipe.
“It just tastes like a cheese toasty,” he said.
