A maximum-security prison unit has been put into lockdown after two prison officers were attacked by an inmate.

Paramedics were called to Melbourne Assessment Prison in West Melbourne about midday following reports of an assault.

It is understood a prisoner punched both officers, who required medical treatment.

A source said one of the officers was “not in a good way.”

The prison unit was put into lockdown as authorities responded to the prison bashing.

Police were notified and are investigating the incident.
