Megan Millar donates her eggs in a bid to help women on the waitlist

Megan Millar does an incredible amount for the community - she’s a blood donor, soup van volunteer and works with an animal charity. But her latest donation is the biggest gift of all.

Megan Millar has given 21 other women the chance at motherhood.

The vet nurse has always given back to the community – as a blood donor, soup van volunteer, working with an animal care charity.

But her selfless act in donating more than two dozen of her eggs is all the more incredible when compared with the number most women are able to give in a lifetime - just six to 12.

Of the 27 Ms Millar donated, 21 were viable.

After deciding that she didn’t want children, Ms Millar said she wanted to try to help the hundreds of women on the waiting list seeking an egg donation.

“There are so many people out there struggling to have children,” she said.

“I’m in a perfect position to donate my eggs and I found out that I’ve got so many viable ones, it just made that decision even more of a good one.

Following medical tests and counselling, Ms Millar got the all clear from specialists that she was a good candidate and in a healthy condition to donate.

“I’m just chuffed I’ve given 21 people the chance to have a baby,” she said.

Ms Millar was asked to write a letter to her future children which will be given to the family receiving the donation.

In Australia, sperm donors are generally plentiful with no wait time for treatment, however the wait for donor eggs can be up to two years, forcing many women overseas in search of treatment.

Overseas donation is often anonymous, in Australia it is more transparent and includes support systems, counselling and the opportunity for the child to access genetic information when they turn 18.

Melbourne IVF fertility specialist, gynaecologist and obstetrician Dr Joe Sgroi said that he hopes more women, like Megan will consider donation.

“There is no greater gift that one woman could give to another woman or couple than that of life and the joy that comes with it,” he said.

“Some women may already have children and wish to donate their eggs.

“There is no impact on their future fertility if they wish to donate their eggs.”
