A manhunt is underway for the driver and a passenger who fled the scene after their speeding SUV ploughed into an elderly woman’s North Melbourne home overnight.
The 84-year-old woman narrowly escaped injury when the speeding Toyota Kluger travelled over a centre median strip in Dryburgh Street and slammed into the front living room about 11.50pm last night.
Police say it is “unbelievable” no one was killed and have urged the pair, a man and a woman, to hand themselves into police.
“The damage to the home and car is significant,” North West Metro Senior Sergeant Olivia Freeman said.
“We also believe the woman has been injured as she was seen limping away from the scene.”
The elderly woman, who was sleeping in a nearby bedroom at the time, was not physically injured but is said to be terribly shaken.
Her home has been extensively damaged and is currently structurally unsafe.
More than 20 firefighters attended the scene.
“The house has been significantly damaged by the impact of the car,” MFB spokesman Jack Overman said.
“Urban search and rescue crews helped shore up the building, which took about two hours. It will be reassessed today.”
Local police, critical incident response team and the dog squad officers responded and searched for the pair but have not located them.
