IT’S BEEN a wild Wednesday on Melbourne’s roads after a man tried to reverse a car on the West Gate Bridge and a four-wheel drive burst into flames on the Monash Freeway.
Commuters were left shocked after seeing a car attempt to reverse on the inbound lanes of the West Gate about 9.15am.

It is believed the man may have lost power on the bridge and tried to reverse back towards the Williamstown Rd exit, VicRoads traffic management spokeswoman Marnie Williams said.
“We have been able to shunt him off the road after he tried reversing down the bridge but we aren’t sure why he tried to do that,” the spokeswoman said.
The man also jumped out of the car and Ms Williams told the Herald Sun drivers should never get out of their vehicle if they get into trouble on the bridge.
“If anyone gets into trouble they should try to get to the emergency lane, put their lights on and stay in the vehicle at all times,” she said.
In a separate incident an 4WD burst into flames in an exit lane of the Monash Freeway outbound near the Warragul Rd exit this morning.
Two lanes were closed as emergency services rushed to the scene but they have since reopened.
The vehicle has also been removed from the scene, VicRoads said.
