A man has been tasered by heavily-armed police after he allegedly threatened terrified passengers with a knife while they were trapped on a Melbourne tram on Saturday morning.

Dramatic video shows a man yelling “I will start killing these girls” as officers outside the tram plead with him to drop the weapon.

“Open the door or I will stab their throat,” he said.

“You’re a f****** c*** open this door.

“Open the door or I will kill one of these girls.”

The video shows police storming the CBD tram and tasering the man after he allegedly pointed a knife at a passenger yelling “shoot me or I’ll kill her”.

The terrifying scene unfolded on the Route 48 tram, on the corner of Collins and King Street in the CBD just before 8.30am.

Police allege the man had stolen from a Collins St 7-Eleven while armed and jumped on the tram to flee the scene.

A police spokeswoman said one woman received minor injuries and a 57-year-old man was now in custody.

She confirmed Critical Incident Response Team officers tasered the man after negotiations for him to drop the weapon failed.

The man, of no fixed address, has been charged with armed robbery, false imprisonment, threats to kill and assault, and was set to appear at Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on Saturday night.

Tamara Janjic, 23, was on board the tram and said she “was terrified”.

“I was broken this morning,” she told Nine News.

“We weren’t too sure what he was going to do next.

“I got really scared. It was really scary.”
