Man struck by digger at Tatura cemetery

A man has been taken to hospital after he was struck by a digger, causing him to fall into a 16-person vault at a cemetery in the state’s north.

UPDATE:

In a statement released on Tuesday Tatura Cemetery said the man and a co-worker were contractors.

They had been working on a 16-vault precast concrete-lined grave at the time of the incident.

It is understood the co-worker had been operating an excavator and jumped into the pit to wait alongside the victim until emergency services arrived.

The Tatura cemetery said two off duty workers witnessed the fall and were pretty “shaken” by it.

A man has been taken to hospital after he was struck by a digger, causing him to fall into a grave at a cemetery in the state’s north.

Emergency services attended the Winter Rd cemetery in Tatura about 5.20pm on Monday after he was hit by “operating machinery”.

“Officers were told a man was struck by operating machinery causing him to fall into a trench in a reserve on Winter Rd,” a police statement said.

It is believed the man was hit by a backhoe and was dragged into a 3m deep hole.

“A 45-year-old Shepparton man was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

“WorkSafe are investing the incident.”

Ambulance Victoria confirmed the man was being treated for upper body injuries.

“Ambulance Victoria was called to an incident just after 5.15pm in Tatura. A man in his 30s has been taken to Goulburn Valley Health in a stable condition with upper body injuries.”
