Man killed as fire destroys Maidstone home

Firefighters pulled a man from his burning Maidstone home, but he could not be revived and died on the scene.

A man has died after a fire ripped through his home in Melbourne’s west overnight.

Neighbours called triple-0 after flames engulfed the Maidstone home on Baird St about 3.15am Tuesday.

Firefighters pulled the man from his home, however he was unresponsive and died at the scene.

A Fire Rescue spokeswoman said it took 50 minutes for firefighters to bring the blaze under control.

“The damage to the house is extensive,” she said

“Firefighters will remain on scene into the morning to continue to extinguish and undertake fire duties.”

A Victoria Police spokeswoman said police were investigating the circumstances surrounding the fire.

“A crime scene has been established and detectives from Wyndham Crime Investigation Unit are attending the scene,” she said.

“It is expected an arson chemist and fire investigators will attend the property this morning.”
