A Bonbeach man has been killed after his Ford Territory ploughed into a power pole in Bayswater North on New Year’s Day, marking state’s first road fatality of 2024.

A man has died in a horror crash in Bayswater North, becoming Victoria’s first road toll victim for 2024.

The 31-year-old Bonbeach man’s car ploughed into a power pole on Canterbury Rd around 3:10pm on New Year’s Day.

He was flown to hospital with life-threatening injuries and later died.

The man was the sole occupant of the gold Ford Territory which could be seen strewn across the road and footpath in the wake of the smash.

Two outbound lanes of Canterbury Rd remain closed between Ramsay St and Bayfield Road East on Tuesday morning.

The right lane remains open but motorists have been urged to allow extra time past the scene.

His death on the first day of the year follows the horror road toll of 2023.

Almost 300 died in driving-related incidents across the state last year – the most deaths in 15 years.

The shocking road toll sparked police warnings for drivers to take care on the roads.
