A large blaze has destroyed a home in Melbourne’s west and left a man in hospital after it tore through a timber property in the early hours of Sunday morning.

The fire took hold of a double-storey weatherboard house at the rear of a property in Albert St, Williamstown, about 4am.

A man in his 20s has been taken to hospital with non-life-threatening burns to his back and arm.

The fire fully engulfed the home before spreading to a shed in a neighbouring yard.

About 30 firefighters were called to the scene, with the blaze deemed under control by just after 7am.

Brent Szalay, told the Herald Sun he woke to find the flames lapping at his neighbour’s property and rushed to help.

“My back neighbour’s shed was on fire,” he said.

“So I went over to his house and helped support him (as he was) trying to save his shed.”

Mr Szalay said personal belongings stored in the shed had been completely destroyed.

The cause of the blaze remains unknown and fire investigators remain on scene.

Albert St remains closed to traffic.
